Born in Orissa, Madhumita Patnaik studied under Guru Sri Durga Charan Ranbir, a direct disciple of the famous Guru Sri Deva Prasad Das. Acquiring from Guru Durga Charan an accomplished technique and fine sense of perfection helped Madhumita develop into a dancer who combines respect for tradition with originality of presentation.
Madhumita was later educated at the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, Pondicherry. Her strong commitment to the sadhana of the Integral Yoga made her choose a life of the brahmacharini. As the natya guru at the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, Pondicherry, India, Madhumita has passed on the Odissi tradition to hundreds of students from India and abroad.
Orissa and Odissi
Renowned throughout India as a place of sanctity and goal of pilgrimage, Orissa, a state on the Bay of Bengal in eastern India, is the home of Odissi, a most dynamic and beautiful of all forms of Indian dance. Like all forms of Indian classical dance, Odissi has two principal elements: nritta or pure dance, and nritya or dance of expression. In the postures and movements of an accomplished dancer, these elements fuse together in myriads of sculptural and rhythmical variations. Odissi developed in the shadow of the great temples of this region, which preserve in granite and sandstone the poses of the dancers of heaven. These sculptures served as models for the gurus who revivified the Odissi tradition in the twentieth century. Notable among the masters who helped bring about this renaissance are Guru Kelucharan Mohanty and Guru Deva Prasad Das, the teacher of Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, who was the teacher of Madhumita and Devasmita Patnaik.
